Fair and Quality Learning Measurements
A strong, aligned assessment confirms that our students are on track for success and that our schools are improving outcomes for Tennessee students while teaching to essential standards.
Restrictions on Kindergarten Eligibility
Imposed a new age cutoff for Kindergarten eligibility, requiring enrollees to be at least five years old by May 15th prior to the start of the school year. By changing the current cutoff of August 15th, this would have rendered nearly one third of prospective students ineligible to attend Kindergarten, placing a greater childcare burden on parents. The proposed changed is not supported by reliable data and places unnecessary limitations on parental choice.
Current Reading Grade Level Included on Student's Report Card
This bill would require that the result of the most recent reading screener, dyslexia screener (if applicable) or other reading level assessment be included on or with the report card for each student attending a public school or public charter school in grades K-8. Promoting transparency for parents to better understand their student's achievement supports accountability and high standards for all.
National ACT/SAT to Replace TCAP as Assessment Bill
Legislation authorizes an LEA, in lieu of the state-mandated standardized tests, including the Tennessee comprehensive assessment program (TCAP) tests, of which TNReady is a part, and the end-of-course examinations, to use the ACT, ACT Aspire, or SAT suites of standardized assessments as an approved testing alternative in math and English language arts for grades 9-12.
Informing Education Improvements
When aligned with Tennessee’s academic standards, annual high-quality assessments provide critical information to teachers, parents, schools and districts so that instruction can be adjusted to match student needs and drive higher achievement. We promote fair and accurate measurements of what our students know, where they are growing and achieving, and where they need more support.
Limited, strong assessments are a critical tool to ensure Tennessee’s classrooms are creating opportunities for students and that schools are teaching students proper and tested material.
Everyone Wins
Good assessments are also essential for quality classroom instruction. A test aligned with high academic standards also aligns professional development opportunities for our teachers, helping them focus their improvement in ways that further support students.
