Governor Lee’s Call for Student-Based Funding Formula is a Transformational Moment Leaders Must Fully Meet

NASHVILLE, TENN. – Tennesseans for Student Success today released the following statement after Governor Bill Lee (R-Tenn.) called for the Tennessee General Assembly to reform the Basic Education Program (BEP) and create a new student-based funding formula during the 2022 State of the State Address:

Three generations of students have attended Tennessee’s public schools since our current funding formula was developed,” said TSS President & CEO Adam Lister. “Governor Lee’s call for the General Assembly to overhaul and improve the way the state funds education is a transformational moment. Leaders must meet that moment and understand the decisions made and actions taken can impact the next three generations of students and leaders. Prioritizing student needs and transparency will be key to making the most of this historic opportunity. It is also essential that any final proposal considered includes an increase of per-student funding for every school, additional wraparound services for students, including academic intervention supports, school nurses, counselors, and support staff, and creates equal opportunities for every student in Tennessee.”

“The priorities laid out in the State of the State, including an additional $1 billion investment in education, an increase in teacher pay, and dedication to expanding career and technical opportunities for students, if adhered to, will make the 2022 legislative session a success for Tennessee’s students and their futures,” Lister added.
