TCAP Results Illustrate the Positive Impact of Investments in Literacy and Public Education

NASHVILLE —  Tennesseans for Student Success (TSS) provided the following statement in response to today’s release of the 2022/2023 Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program (TCAP) state-level results that once again show encouraging progress in the recovery of pandemic-related learning loss.

“The importance of an annual assessment to measure student progress cannot be understated. Assessments that are aligned to our state standards and provide meaningful accountability to guide and support student learning are essential. Without these tools, student success would be only a wish, not a mission,” said Adam Lister, President & CEO of Tennesseans for Student Success. “This year, student proficiency increased nearly ten percentage points in math and English language arts compared to 2021 COVID-era results. These gains mean that today nearly 100,000 children across TN are back on an academic trajectory that will more likely lead to a successful life. The growth we celebrate is driven by thousands of dedicated teachers and parents along with Governor Bill Lee and members of the Tennessee General Assembly who championed policies to address the state’s COVID learning loss and combat our literacy crisis.”

This year’s assessment shows growth in all subject areas including these improvements:

  • Math: 3.2 percent increase from last year’s proficiency rate and more than 8 percent increase from 2020/2021.
  • English Language Arts: 1.6 percent increase from last year’s proficiency rate and more than 8 percent increase from 2020/2021.
  • Science: 3.4 percent increase from last year proficiency rate and nearly 5 percent increase from 2020/2021.

This growth in achievement is happening in part due to the support provided by the Tennessee Literacy Success Act and the Tennessee Learning Loss Remediation and Student Acceleration Act that jointly helped students get back on track following the COVID-19 pandemic.

Tennesseans for Student Success is a statewide network of parents and caregivers, teachers, community leaders, volunteers, and advocates dedicated to championing and supporting Tennessee’s students and their futures.
