TCAP Results Show the Vital Role Testing Plays in Classroom Transparency

NASHVILLE — Tennesseans for Student Success (TSS) released the following statement on the 2024-25 Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program (TCAP) state-level results that continue to show investments in literacy, tutoring, and strong academic standards are paying off for students.

“This year’s TCAP results provide invaluable evidence of the effort students, parents, teachers, and lawmakers all made together to produce improvements in all subject areas,” said TSS President and CEO Lana Skelo. “We know Tennessee’s investments in school funding and commitment to preserving high academic standards are working because our students have continued to demonstrate improvements year after year. We encourage lawmakers to ignore calls to weaken the state’s assessment system that’s keeping learning on track and ensuring transparency into schools.”
This year’s assessments show important growth in all subject areas, including improvements in:
• Math: Proficiency increased in every grade level, including a gain of more than five percentage points for sixth-grade students.
• English Language Arts: Most tested grades showed gains in proficiency, including a nearly four percentage point increase in both English I and English II.
• Science: Statewide science achievement continues to progress, with student proficiency increasing by nearly two percentage points since 2024.
• Social Studies: Results in elementary and middle school show a nearly four percentage point increase in social studies.

In recent years, the Tennessee General Assembly has enacted several key pieces of legislation aimed at advancing student outcomes, including increased investments in teacher salaries, high-dosage tutoring, the Literacy Success Act, and outcomes-based funding within the Tennessee Investment in Student Achievement (TISA) Act.
Tennesseans for Student Success is a statewide network of teachers, parents, community leaders, and volunteers who are dedicated to supporting, championing, and fighting for Tennessee’s students and their futures.
