Tennesseans for Student Success Announces Scholarship Winners

NASHVILLE – Tennesseans for Student Success today announced the winners of Tristar Reads, an annual contest to encourage students across the Volunteer State to read for at least 20 minutes a day during the summer break.

A $1000 scholarship will be awarded to one elementary school (K – 5th grade) student, one middle school student (6th – 8th grade), and one high school student (9th – 12th grade) who participated in the Tristar Reads program, read, and logged the most hours over the course of the summer.

“From Bristol to Memphis, Clarksville to Chattanooga, we are excited so many of Tennessee’s kids found their adventure in books this summer,” said Tennesseans for Student Success President and CEO Adam Lister. “Reading 20 minutes a day introduces kids to 1.8 million words a year. This year’s readers logged more than 140,000 minutes of reading and helped keep their literacy, reading, and comprehension skills sharp for the school year.”

The three winners for 2017 are:

  • K – 5th Grade Winner: Sarah Collier, a 5th grade student at Harpeth Middle School in Kingsport Springs, TN, is the K – 5th grade winner. Sarah read more than 211 hours over the summer. A few of the books Sarah enjoyed include the Warriors book series by Erin Hunter, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them by J.K. Rowling, the Spirit Animals book series, and the Bible.
  • 6th – 8th Grade Winner: Arch Herring, an 8th grade student at Ocoee Middle School in Cleveland, TN, is the 6th – 8th grade winner. Arch read more than 338 hours over the summer. Arch enjoyed reading the Five Kingdoms series by Brandon Mull, Quidditch through the Ages by J.K. Rowling, The Prisoner’s Dilemma by William Poundstone, and the Inheritance Cycle series by Christopher Paolini.
  • 9th – 12th Grade Winner: Madison Brewer, a 12th grade student at Hancock County High School in Sneedville, TN, is the 9th – 12th grade winner. Madison read 296 hours over the summer. A few of the books Madison read over the summer include the Selection series by Kiera Cass, the Fallen series by Lauren Kate, First Love by James Patterson, and the Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer.

Lister continued: “Tennesseans for Student Success launched this initiative in 2016 to encourage summer reading. We are proud of all our summer readers and look forward to celebrating their continued success.”
