Legislative Update – April 4, 2016

We wanted to let you know House Bill 1537/ Senate Bill 2540 passed the Senate this week and is on its way to the Governor’s desk for his signature.

We’re pretty excited about this bill because it does some really great things for Tennessee’s classrooms: releases TNReady questions and answers, requires local education authorities to explain any additional assessments they require, and eliminates two state-required exams – one in the 8th grade and one in the 10th.

Fewer, better tests. We’ve said all along that there is value in a yearly assessment. We also believe the best preparation for that yearly assessment is outstanding teaching – not more standardized tests. Tennessee’s students should take fewer, but better tests that provide everyone involved in the classroom real, valuable information to support learning and improve teaching.
