Tristar Reads

This annual contest encourages Tennessee kids to read for at least 20 minutes a day during the summer break.

K-12 students log reading hours for the chance to earn $1,000 scholarships, books, and other awards.

Stopping the Summer Slide

We all know how important it is to encourage children to read during the summer.

Studies show that summer reading is critical to help students stay sharp for the upcoming school year. Students who do not read during the summer can quickly fall behind, losing between one and three months of learning. Worse, the “Summer Slide” is cumulative, meaning learning losses build up year after year.

According to the National Summer Learning Association, the Summer Slide is “one of the most significant causes of the achievement gap between lower and higher income youth and one of the strongest contributors to the high school dropout rate.”

3+ Million Reading Minutes Logged

Since it began, Tristar Reads has logged more than 3 million minutes of student reading over the summer and helped hundreds of students access virtual books to expand access.

“Tristar Reads celebrates the potential for every student in Tennessee to be a strong reader who is prepared for success in the classroom and beyond. I commend these students for their hard work this summer and congratulate each scholarship winner.”
