Tristar Reads is our annual summer reading contest designed to encourage students across the Volunteer State to keep up their reading skills during the summer while also cultivating a joy for reading. Each summer, we ask students to log every hour they read by filling out a form on our website and the student in each age category (elementary, middle, and high school) who reads the most, wins a $1,000 scholarship applied to their 529 savings account. Reading is its own reward, but Tristar Reads will also host activities and challenges where students can win fun prizes throughout the summer by following our weekly newsletters.
Last year, Tallen Haag from Portland, Tennessee, won the elementary age division for reading around 470 hours! It’s encouraging to see a Tennessee student work hard to reach a goal and succeed. Read below as Tallen shares about her experience with Tristar Reads last summer. Join the conversation online by following @TristarReads on Twitter and getting your student registered to read with us all summer long at www.tristarreads.com.
Here’s what Tallen had to say:
“Tristar Reads is an amazing summer program because it encourages kids to read. I participated in the program during the last two summers. It encouraged me to read even more than I would have normally, but I never thought I’d be a winner! My favorite book genres are mystery, science, and history. Some of my favorite books include Nancy Drew: Secret of the Old Clock, Da Wild, Da Crazy, Da Vinci, 30-Second Elements, and Who is Malala Yousafzai. Last summer, I won the Tristar Reads elementary category. When they called my name at the award ceremony, I was trembling in shock. I was so surprised that I had won! The $1,000.00 college scholarship means so much to me. It will help me attend college where I hope to study science, possibly physics. Thank you, Tristar Reads!”
Let’s keep reading and prevent the summer slide this summer!
