TRISTAR READS: Reading is Magic

Welcome to the kick-off week of Tristar Reads 2020! We are pleased you’ve joined us as we journey through the magic of reading this summer.

Tristar Reads is an annual summer reading program by Tennesseans for Student Success designed to encourage students K-12 to read at least 20 minutes a day during the summer months. The program runs from May 1 – September 7, 2020, and will award the reader who logs the most amount of minutes in elementary, middle, and high school with a $1,000 scholarship!

Reading is Magic: Watch Rep. Dunn Read the “Little Red Hen”

Here at Tristar Reads, we believe that reading is magic. Books can transport you to any world at any time if you choose to dive in. You hold the keys to a new adventure every day if you unlock the door and step into the magic of a good book. This summer, our Tristar Reads theme is reading is magic because we want you to experience the magic that reading truly is. We will go on a journey each week of this summer to discover why reading is so important.

This week we are kicking off our summer of magic by watching Rep. Bill Dunn (and his chickens!) from Knoxville, TN, as he reads aloud “Little Red Hen.”

It’s not too late to sign up for Tristar Reads. You can sign up at any time and still get involved in what we’re doing here all summer long.

Facebook Live’s Read-Alongs with TN Legislators

This week, we had several of our friends from the Tennessee General Assembly read aloud to us on Facebook Live. If you missed those, we’ve linked a few below to feature and share with you here. Feel free to share those videos with your friends and children who’d like to watch.

ICYMI: Read about 2019’s Elementary Winner TSR Experience

Last year, Tallen Haag from Portland, Tennessee, won the elementary age division for reading around 470 hours! Read our blog post as Tallen shares about her experience with Tristar Reads last summer. Join the conversation online by following @TristarReads on Twitter and getting your student registered to read with us all summer long at www.tristarreads.com.

Challenge of the Week

Have you taken a virtual museum, aquarium, or zoo tour? Reply to this email with a cool new fact you learned as a part of the tour. The first 3 people to respond will receive a book from us!

Here are a few fun museums to visit: the Louvre, George Aquarium, Smithsonian’s National Zoo, Boston Children’s Museum, and a few Canadian museums and attractions.

Connect with Tennesseans for Student Success by using #TristarReadsWithUs on Twitter and Facebook. Periodically throughout the summer, we will be creating small challenges and games in this newsletter so pay close attention for a chance to win a gift card or surprise!
