TRISTAR READS: Dreaming is Magic

Read-Along Sen. Bill Powers as He Reads “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie”

Studies show that reading aloud to your children has clear cognitive effects and can lead to eventual success in reading. One study found that kindergarten children who were read to at least three times a week had a “significantly greater phonemic awareness than did children who were read to less often.”

That said, we want to encourage you to continue reading aloud to your child as the summer begins to wrap up. Use these videos as a tool to have someone new read to them! Enjoy Sen. Powers reading aloud with us here.

Dreaming is Magic

Whether you’re dreaming about a fantasy tale and reading to your stuffed animals, about your future and what college you’ll go to next year, or anything in between, dreaming can be fun and a great use or our imagination! Far too often, children quit dreaming about the aspirations and goals they have for more realistic ideas, and while there’s always a time and a place, we want to encourage students to dream BIG!

We’d love to hear back from you what your students are dreaming about with a photo or video of their goals – big or small. Some ideas are a photo of your child teaching to their pretend classroom or a video of a student at their job with hopes of a promotion. As adults, we often quit dreaming so we would like to encourage you to dream BIG, even when you’re small. What are your students dreaming about? Reply to this email and let us know!

Voting in Tennessee

Tomorrow is the last day for early voting in Tennessee so if you haven’t voted yet, gear up for election day next week, Thursday, August 6th.

Additionally, we know that the election process can sometimes be confusing with a lot of information everywhere, so we made it easy for you. Check out our new blog post: Voting, Elections, and Questions You Might Be Scared to Ask Part I. Be on the lookout for part II next week.

Reminder: We Need Your Feedback

Would you lend us your input and thoughts by letting us know how you think the Tristar Reads summer reading program is going so far? We would love to know the things you are enjoying and ways we can improve our program for the future. It should only take a couple of minutes of your time and we would greatly value what you have to say.
